Summer and extended learning programs play an important role in providing a safe space for student learning and exploration, especially for BIPOC students. This starts with a staff that is well-equipped with the social and emotional intelligence to support, lead and navigate this work. Upfront training can provide context on racial equity and access amid the COVID-19 pandemic and help organizations understand how to better support BIPOC staff as they navigate their own challenges in the space. With nearly a year passing since the groundswell of racial unrest in our country, the time is now for organizations to align actions with words towards becoming antiracist and equipping program staff to do the same. Breakthrough Collaborative has assembled a Race Equity Diversity & Inclusion (REDI) Workgroup of program leaders, staff, former teaching fellows and instructional coaches to do just that. This workgroup, composed of a diverse set of stakeholders across the organization, is actively focusing on how we’ll train Breakthrough summer teaching fellows to connect their own personal identity to the educator role and equip them with a culturally responsive curriculum and strategies to navigate this summer and support our students. This webinar discussion examining how organizations can best equip summer program staff with tools & training on race, equity and inclusion in order to meet student needs and maximize program impact this summer.
