“The Copper Colored Children of Anacostia” theme hails from the Nacotchtank Indians, who inhabited Ward 8, described as having “copper colored skin”. We pay homage to our aboriginal family, by teaching youth the importance of their ancestry and connection to Africa. Through extensive research, playwrights illustrate their knowledge covering topics, such as Queen Nzinga of Angola, Akhenaten Pharaoh of Egypt and Oko Nigerian God of Agriculture, as well as writing about conquering fear and the history of the enslaved builders of the white house.
CLT/JKI teaching artist guided youth workers, in workshops, where young people composed original music, built set pieces, designed costumes, learned photography and videography, acting, choreography, marketing and public relations. They also learned stage management, light and sound design and hospitality. The summer youth employees worked diligently to assure a successful festival. The youth withheld no restraint, using their creativity and talent, illuminating the power of their history; telling their stories as interpreted and seen through their own eyes. “The passion exhibited throughout the performance will resonate with you long into the future. We look forward to providing wholesome entertainment to our community,” states Jermaine Harris, Project Director, Children Legacy Theater.
