Join Learn24 at the Fall 2018 Conference hosted by the Institute for Youth Development for one-day that will inspire youth development practitioners working in Out-of-School Time (OST) programs throughout the District of Columbia. Keynote speaker Larry Bell is nationally known for providing strategies to help students increase academic performance and staff support students. Interim Deputy Mayor for Education Ahnna Smith will provide remarks during the lunch plenary session. Attendees will learn best practices, innovative strategies, lessons learned and more to help improve outcomes beyond the school day for District of Columbia youth.

Breakout Session One (10:05 AM - 11:20 AM)

Strategies to Use the Power to Make a Difference - Larry Bell, Nationally Recognized Educational Consultant and Author

  • Improving the quality of interactions with youth in OST programs. 
  • Why a quality OST program matters in and to our community.
  • Hearing youth voice and implementing into OST programs.

Trauma Informed Practices - M. Themba Masini, The Masimini Group, LLC

  • Learn exactly how trauma affects children physiologically. 
  • Learn to recognize behavior that may be the result of trauma and techniques to address that behavior without re-traumatization.

Successfully Transitioning from OST staff to Supervisor - Katherine Spinney, Katherine Spinney LLC 

  • Identify the necessary skills and mindset of a successful OST leader.
  • Develop a vision and plan to become a strong OST supervisor.

Becoming a World Class Organization - Arthurine Walker, Fair Chance

  • Understand the importance of assessing your organization's strengths and challenge areas.

  • Learn how to articulate to funders and other interested community members: what you do, why you do it, what your results are, and what you need to acheive those results.

Quality Programming! How Higher Achievement used YPQA to Improve Youth Voice and Choice - Angelica Barrett, Higher Achievement; Elyse Harris, Higher Achievement

  • Learn about the YPQA tool and how to use YPQA data to inform more quality programming.
  • Hear about two case study examples of how YPQA was implemented to develop youth centered programs. 
  • Gain tools to support immediate program improvement.

Addressing Harm: Bringing Restorative Language and Teaching to Youth - Liz London, Constructive Communities

  • Understand the core principles of restorative justice and be able to identify how it compares to traditional discipline.
  • Equip with restorative language to address harm that is the foundation of nonviolent communication.
  • Learn and prepare to use a reframing technique that is a practical tool for managing conflict and harm among youth.

Social Media Professionalism and Personal Branding - Gabriel Parker, ReCon Soul L.C.

  • Identify best practices for student engagement via social media.
  • Discuss the importance of professionalism across digital channels. Identify best professional practices across digital channels. 
  • Create a LinkedIn profiles for attendees, for professional networking purposes.

  • Learn how to identify key non-negotiable attributes to look for when interviewing.
  • Identify the best interview strategies for your program.

  • Receive strategies for encouraging voice and choice with young people of diverse learning needs.
  • Gain tips on structuring practical opportunities for young people to make decisions within time/resource constraints.
